About Me
I’m Sean Thuis, an AHCS registered Cardiac Physiologist with over 20 years’ experience in cardiac diagnostics.
I began my training in 2003 at the South West Cardiothoracic Centre in Devon, later graduating with honours in Clinical Science from the University of Sussex alongside achieving the ASCST Part I and Part II professional qualifications.
Throughout my career, I have worked across a wide range of NHS cardiology services, from internationally recognised tertiary cardiac centres including Papworth and Leicester, through to district general hospitals and remote island healthcare settings.
I gained adult transthoracic echocardiography accreditation in 2012 and have extensive experience in advanced echocardiology, including stress echocardiography and transoesophageal echocardiography.
I have a particular professional interest in mitral valve disease and cardiomyopathy, with experience using advanced echocardiographic techniques and quantitative methods to support detailed cardiac assessment of conditions such as ARVC, DCM and HOCM.
My wider clinical expertise includes exercise testing, ambulatory ECG monitoring, advanced 12-lead ECG interpretation, pacemaker interrogation, programming and troubleshooting, and the delivery of acute cardiology services, including more than 15 years’ experience running rapid access chest pain clinics.
I am an Advanced Life Support provider and previously worked as an Immediate Life Support instructor.
Alongside my clinical work, I have taught cardiac ultrasound, practical ECG acquisition and advanced rhythm analysis to healthcare professionals including students, nurses and GPs, and previously worked as a visiting academic at De Montfort University specialising in cardiac ultrasound education.
In 2020, I moved to Shetland and served as Principal Cardiac Physiologist at Gilbert Bain Hospital until 2026.
I founded Island Heart Clinic to bring high-quality, accessible cardiac diagnostics to Shetland — providing timely local access to professional cardiac investigations, with results communicated promptly to each patient’s GP to support ongoing care where needed.
In my spare time, I enjoy family walks with our dog, learning languages, cooking and playing chess and Mario Kart with my daughters.
